Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgYes, we’re back!

Alas, the previously mentioned software updates did not materialize. We’re still waiting for the hosting service to upload them. No problem!

I woud like to let our readers know that October 2007 marks the 20th Anniversary of the planting of the Mexico City Church of Christ. Thirteen missionaries arrived in Mexico City in the summer of 1987, sent by the Boston Church of Christ, to begin a multiplying ministry in the largest city of the Western world. Twenty years later, we have a discipling church in all but  6 of the states of the enormous republic of Mexico. The most recent plantings are Zacatecas and Tampico. We will post some news from those plantings later this week.

I am grateful for the opportunity that my family and I received when we were chosen to be on the Mexico City mission team in 1987. That experience will always play a major role in my life no matter what the future brings. Therefore, in addition to our usual news reports and musings, I will try to bring to our readers more of the history of our mission to Mexico. Please come back, and enjoy our posts!

Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgI apologize if you have been visiting and not finding any new posts. We are in the midst of doing some upgrades to the system, and I want to make sure everything is working well before we continue posting news. Please come back next week!

How you finish…

Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgI’m sure many of us watched the Super Bowl game yesterday. It was fun to watch Ian Scott play for Chicago; Ian is a member of the Chicago Church of Christ. Unfortunately his team didn’t fare too well against the Indianapolis Colts, who won 29-17. However, for the first few minutes it looked like Chicago was going to totally embarrass the Colts. A touchdown return on the opening kickoff, an interception, and a quick 14-6 lead in just a few minutes!

It reminded me of an interview I heard a few years ago, after the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series title in decades. The interviewer asked one of the Red Sox players, “Back in March when your team was barely playing above .500, would you have imagined that you were going to make it all the way to the championship?”, and the player answered, “It goes to show that it doesn’t matter how you start, what matters is how you finish!”

Based on the first few minutes of yesterday’s game, it didn’t look too promising for the Colts. But, once more, it doesn’t matter how you start, what matters is how you finish. The Colts rose to the challenge and dominated the rest of the game.

As Christians, we sometimes find ourselves going through tough times, or we feel handicapped by the effects that our sins have had on our lives, or we feel frustrated by our inability to get past certain shortcomings or doubts or fears. But no matter where we’re at today, just remember…it doesn’t matter how you start, what matters is how you finish. Don’t give up! Keep up the fight! God will help you to the finish line!

Church in Leon, Guanajuato, sends missionaries to Zacatecas

Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgToday we are sharing some encouraging news from the church in Leon, Guanajuato. This relatively young church recently raised a special missions contribution so they too could participate in the mission work in Mexico. Here is something from the minister in Leon, Francisco Botello,

This past Sunday, January 28, the Leon Church of Christ bid farewell to our beloved brother and sister in Christ, Fernando Avila and Claudia Herrera. We are sending them off to be part of the mission team to the city of Zacatecas! Fernando and Claudia were converted at the Tecnologico de misioneroszacatecas1.jpgLeon, five and four years ago, respectively. They were part of our college ministry and had recently graduated, but they’re willing to give up job opportunities here to move away and help to advance God’s Kingdom. We saw them arrive, we saw them grow, and now we see them leave. It is a testimony of God’s plans for His children. We want for all the churches to be encouraged and continue working on the task that Jesus left us, knowing that today’s converts will become tomorrow’s missionaries.

Congratulations to Fernando and Claudia. Our prayers go with you!
