Turning Point

Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgLast Sunday I visited a very exciting group of the L.A. Church. It used to be called the Arts, Media and Sports (AMS) Region, but it has been renamed the Turning Point Christian Church. Although it continues to be affiliated with the L.A. Church, they’ve developed some very innovative approaches to worship and ministry.

I don’t have words to describe the experience. Maybe “blown away”. The Sunday service was so inspiring and dynamic that, if I was a first time visitor, I would want to go back again and again. There was great worship music, a great lesson by evangelist Kevin Holland, recognitions of several individuals in the church who have graduated from school or distinguished themselves by serving others in various ways, … all in all, a complete package of spiritually uplifting content.

I was there to do a presentation on Mexico and Central America missions because on that day they were raising a special contribution for missions. My son, who will be attending a performing arts school in the L.A. area this fall, went with me. He was thrilled! He met many of the members and is already “hooked up” with other disciples in the performing arts field for when he moves up there to start school. (Thank you, brothers and sisters, specially Kevin, Christian, Jamal, Juliette, Georgette … oh, so many, for making my son and I feel so at home!)

This year the Turning Point is sponsoring two short mission tours, one to El Salvador and one to Costa Rica. The church’s response to our MCA Missions presentation was enthusiastic and heartsy. I am very proud to have this ministry as one of our partners in MCA Missions.

If you want to know more about the Turning Point please go to their website, and prepare to be amazed!

Coming soon: International Leadership Conference

Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgLet’s start today’s post with some news from Managua, Nicaragua. Our brother Carlos Mendieta shares that “Pedro de la Vega is a well known hairstylist here in Nicaragua. His wife Jezreel had been visiting variousnica0707-dro_de_la_vega_y_esposa.jpg churches seeking God but only following religiosity and focusing on the outside appearance instead of the heart. Pedro had been invited to our church nine years ago. He visited for a while but never wanted to make a commitment to Christ because there were things in his life he didn’t want to address. Tired of empty religious traditions, Jezreel did accept the challenge to study the Bible and become a disciple of Jesus. Recently, both Pedro and Jezreel were baptized, and they have been a great inspiration for the whole church.”

ilc_main_page_2007.jpgThe 2007 International Leadership ConferenceFor All Generations, will take place Sunday, October 7 – Tuesday evening, October 9th at the Anaheim Convention Center. Hosted by the Los Angeles International Church of Christ, it promises to be a great time of fellowship, worship and learning for disciples of Christ from all around the world. For more information go to the conference website.

guatemala-youth-minsitry-group.pngThe Youth Ministry of the Guatemala Church has a new website. This group started with a handful of teens and now numbers several dozen members, plus many young men and women who are studying the Bible to become Christians. They also have a rock band! Click here to see what they’re up to.

campus-conference-2007.jpgThe Boston Church hosted the recent International Campus Ministries Conference, “To the Ends of the Earth”. The conference closed with a worship service together with the Boston Church. Here’s an excerpt from the article at the church’s web page:

The ever inspiring Doug Arthur the new Boston Lead Evangelist delivered an inspiring, challenging and faith provoking lesson entitled, “To the ends of the earth.”  We cried, we laughed, we were moved. He challenged the college students, the older Christians and every one to make a decision to return to a radical faith, zeal, holiness and righteousness. He closed out with a challenge, “Make up your mind to make it to the end.” His own trial tested faithfulness gave his message an added credibility.

And with that note, we say good-bye!

A new web site, a new baptism, a new book…

Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgThis week we bring some news from Central America and from our partners at CSA Press Latinoamerica.

nica-webpage-0707.jpgThe Church in Managua, Nicaragua has a new website. Although it’s still a work in progress, you can already go to http://www.iicnicaragua.wordpress.com/ and get a glimpse of the future. We are glad to see our churches embrace new technologies and move forward in the information age. May God pour many blessings on the Managua Church.

Marlon Fernandez, lead minister for the church in San Salvador, tells us of a recent conversion: About a year and a half ago, our brother Oscar invited his friend Miguel to church. Although Miguel seemed to be open to the gospel, there were many obstacles to overcome: work, family, financial struggles, etc. His progress was so slow that sometimes the other church members told Oscar to give up, that Miguel was never going to become a Christian. But Oscar decided to continue fighting for his friend’s salvation. Well, Oscar’s perseverance paid off: last week Miguel was baptized! And soon, his wife will also be baptized. Oscar was a great example for those of us who “throw the towel” when our friends don’t respond quickly to the message.

cover_que-hablen.jpgWe are also very happy to communicate some great news on behalf of CSA Press Latinoamerica. They are releasing a new book, “Que hablen los primeros cristianos” (Let the Early Christians Speak), which is a new Spanish translation of “Will The Real Heretics Please Stand Up” by David Bercot. Many of us have been inspired by the convictions and the example of the early Christians, as described by the author. The book will make you question many of the standards, or lack thereof, of contemporary Christianity.

Video Clip: 2004 Mission Tour

Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgHere is a short clip from our 2004 mission tour. Five members of the L.A. Church went to Guatemala City for a short term mission program. They stayed with local families, helped with the HOPE worldwide school program, and also participated in the 9th Central American Missions Conference, titled “Nuestra Fuerza” (Our Strength).
