Leadership Training in the Mexico City Mission

Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgIn 1988 the Mexico City Church of Christ hosted the first (and only) Latin American Missions Conference for what would eventually become the International Churches of Christ (ICOC). The Mexico City Church was one year old. Over 80 people had been baptized in that first year. With churches in Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo and Mexico City, our movement was full of vision and hope. Many guest speakers were invited from churches in Boston, Chicago, San Diego, New York City and other cities. However, and perhaps of greater significance, what stood out was the participation of several young men and women who had been converted during that first year of the mission work.

1988 Missions Conference

 According to the Conference brochure (see photo above), in one year the church had grown from two to fourteen small Bible Study Groups (Bible Talks) Nine of those Bible Talks were led by Mexican converts. Seven of them were serving as full time interns for the church. Let’s talk about how those young men and women were trained…

MCA Missions: The Initial Wave

Mission Diaries Logo small white.jpgIn our previous post we presented an outline of the development of Latin American missions by the International Churches of Christ (ICOC). In previous posts we have described the planting of the Mexico City Church in 1987. Hopefully our readers can go back and read about the vision, the team, the training, the initial strategies  and the foundation of the church’s campus ministry. All of that was the prototype of what we call the First (or Initial) Wave of mission work.

Latin Leaders Fellowship

A celebration during the International Leadership Conference of 2007. The majority of the ministers seen in this picture were converted during the first two mission “waves”, many of them as young singles or college students.
